RED CENTRE

The deserts around Alice Springs, include Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon, the mighty Macdonnell Ranges

STRZLECKI DESERT

The small desert where Burke and Wills met their fate, Innamincka, the Coongie Lakes and the Moomba gas field.


GREAT VICTORIA DESERT

The largest desert, its parallel dunes stretching from Coober Pedy to Laverton just to the north of the Nullabor Plain. Site for the British bomb tests at Maralinga and Emu Plains, and the roads made by Len Beadell and ther Gunbarrell Road Construction Crew.

THE GREAT SANDY DESERT

A vast sandy plain dotted with breakaways and secret water holes.The top part of the Canning Stock Route cuts it in two, running across dunes from Wiluna to Halls Creek.

 

THE GIBSON DESERT

Named by explorer Ernest Giles after one of his crew who perished there. Plains and ranges stretch across the mid west, the start of the Canning Stock Route.


STURTS STONY DESERT

Named after Captain Charles Sturt in his pursuit of the Great Inland Sea. It's prehistoric traces can be found in fossils and vast salt lakes.

TANAMI DESERT

The great interior of the Northern Territory, north of Alice Springs, with many large cattle stations, majestic ranges, gold mines and the enormous Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater.





SIMPSON DESERT 

Also known to the traditional custodians as Mungathirri, a dune field interspersed with gibber plains, thermal springs, broken dreams and oil exploration tracks. Camels are plentiful and after rain it bogs down for weeks, then blooms with glory. Central Simpson. North East Simpson.  West Simpson
